Wacken XXX – August 1-3, 2019

30 years? Has it seriously been three decades? Congrats to the 30th W:O:A Anniversary!

What once started as a small local village concert in 1990 for around 800 metalheads has developed into the greatest international Metal Festival on the entire planet, having been sold out in years! More than 200 bands and 75.000 metalheads made their pilgrimage to the XXX anniversary edition of 2019 to the state of Schleswig-Holstein in the north of Germany.

Wacken is also a festival known for innovation, and 2019 was no different. The formerly infamous Campground C not only holds Bullhead City Circus (W.E.T. Stage and Headbanger’s Stage) and the new History Stage tent, but the restructured Camping Plaza included the Wacken Future Factory, Full Gaming Metal Village and a large supermarket, meaning that campers did not have to carry the groceries all the long way from the village. The area included a food plaza, motordrome and DJ Stage, providing more room for the pre-parties prior to the infield opening on Thursday.

Another new experience were not one but two evacuations of the infield due to severe storm warnings. Visitors were asked to find shelter in their cars, and the relaxed crowd behaved exemplary. The storms passed by without anyone being at risk. In fact, there was so little rain that the infamous rubber boots were not even needed. The grounds dried up quickly – sorry, no crazy mud stories this year ;).

Prior to this year’s edition, the preparations even got a little political when Cambodian band Doch Chkae (“Dog Life”) were denied their visas to play Wacken. The formerly homeless kids found a way to deal with their frustration living in the waste dump of the country’s capital Phnom Penh by forming a death metal band, singing in their native language Khmer. But the story took a lucky turn as their social worker and Wacken management would not accept a “no” from the German Embassy and continued campaigning for them until there were finally issued their paperwork. Yet another success story proving how metal has no borders, uniting cultures and religions.

But let’s get to what it is all about: music! As always it is impossible to cover the complexity of the many stages and bands as you’d need seven cat lives to experience it all.

When the infield opened on Thursday visitors were greeted by the traditional Skyline concert, consisting of the founding fathers of Wacken, also featuring the ever smiling motivated Doro Pesch. Later that night we saw performances of Swiss Krokus, Australian Airborne, Swedish Hammerfall and Sabaton, who celebrated their 20th anniversary with a huge production playing both main stages simultaneously.

This writer hates getting up early, but Friday morning was pure progressive heaven! The day started with Tunisian Myrath opening on the W:E:T stage. The former Symphony X cover band have always been great musicians, but for this show they had taken it up a notch: A magician and several artists accompanied the belly dancer alongside an Arabian stage setting right out of a fairytale. Very happy to see how impressive their act has become!

But not much time to dwell as I already had to rush back to the infield: The mighty Queensryche were playing at noon. After a very muddy 2016 experience it was the second time the lineup with Todd La Torre hit the main stage, opening with Blood of the Levant from their latest album “The Verdict”. Although their stage time was early in the day, they’ve attracted an impressive size crowd who were eager to sing along some classic Ryche songs. Walk with me? Alryche! 😊

Turns out the early time slots were lucky indeed, as the show was followed by a thunderstorm warning, canceling several bands like Swedish Evergrey, who were set up and ready, just about to go on stage. The infield was completely closed for about 1,5 hours with just a bit of rain – but in Wacken you never know how the weather might unfold – so safety first!

Body Count featuring ICE-T was a highlight as they had never played the Holy Grounds before. Entering the stage with Motörhead tunes, it was a best of featuring famous songs from their 1992 self-titled album like KKK Bitch, Voodoo, There Goes the Neighborhood and, yeah you’ve guessed it: Bodycount (in da house!) Back in the early 90s, their political statements caused lots of controversy, specially in regard to their “Cop Killer” song, referring to corrupt police officers and ongoing violence in South Central Los Angeles – very real as their bassist Lloyd Roberts III a.k.a. Mooseman “accidentally” got shot in a drive-by shooting later in 2001. The were well received and put on one hell of a show, throwing in some Slayer and Suicical Tendencies guitar riffs. I definitely hope they will return for a headliner tour of Europe!

Demons & Wizards, a project by Jon Shaffer (Iced Earth) and German singer Hansi Kürsch (Blind Guardian), was a strange duo to watch, as the boyish singer seemed glued to his spot on stage and could not hold up the energy of his American counterpart.

Slayer - Slayer – Slayer! Of course everyone was awaiting the trash legends as this was announced to be their last show at a German festival – ever! I’ve once joked that Wacken was built for Slayer. And it’s true, no Slayer concert has ever been as intense, the sound quality and vibration from Wacken’s many loudspeakers is so much deeper than any other festival, touching the core of your soul. Hard to imagine that the touring old stars will retire. Let’s hope they will keep it going as the Scorpions and extend the retirement tour for a few more years.

Saturday’s highlight was Rage of Prophets, a super group with musicians from Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave, Public Enemy and Cypress Hill. Rap and hip hop mixed with metal and a strong political agenda (“Make America Rage Again”) had the Wacken crowd “Jump Around” to the “House of Pain” classic. Top notch show, intelligent and fun!

The evening program served classics like Powerwolf and Saxon, but also a mostly younger metalcore crowd, with Bullet for my Valentine and Australian Parkway Drive.

For the upcoming 2020 edition from July 30th – August 1st, festival founders Thomas Jensen Holger and Hübner came up with something new and special: The largest metal party in the world will feature sights and sounds, foods and shows celebrating the Mayan and Aztecan culture.
